Often when we think of a great summer holiday, we think of sun, sand and surf. With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, accompanied by seaside towns and cities that cover the entertainment needs of the whole family, why consider elsewhere?
Because in Australia we have the luxury of a lot of space — so we should use it! When considering your holiday this Christmas, think about hitting the water, and donning the water skis — away from the beach!
Along with great beaches, Australia also has amazing inland waterways that not only link into unique townships and regional centres, but offer even more water fun than the beach. If you’re looking at ways to hit the water this summer holidays without heading to crowded beaches, why not consider these:
1. Houseboat
Australia’s largest waterways, such as The Murray River, offer great opportunities to get the entire family onto the water — in hired houseboats. With all the modern conveniences, your own swimming hole right outside your bedroom window and the perfect fishing spot off your veranda, this is an experience your family won’t forget.
2. Getting extreme
Whether you have a boat license or not, you can jump in a speed boat for the day — or the week, and get the family into water sports. Boats can be hired, as can drivers if you have no license, and equipment such as donuts, wakeboards and skis can either be hired or purchased depending on your level of commitment.
3. Camping
If living and boating on the water isn’t for you, what about next to it? Camping is a brilliant budget holiday for the whole family. Great riverside locations exist throughout Australia, and give you an opportunity to get away from the game consoles and DVDs and spend real, quality time together.
4. Fishing
Fishing charters are a particularly great holiday for the lads. With tours up through rivers and estuaries running throughout Australia, Victoria is particularly good for quality fishing.
5. Take a cruise
Finally, if something a little more luxury is your style, try a tour boat ride up the Murrumbidgee River to take in the country side in style. Depending on your tour guide, these adventures can be overnight, or just an afternoon of fun in the sun and relaxation.
If inland waterways aren’t you’re thing and your still on the hunt for that perfect waterside summer holiday, why not take it to the next level? An ocean cruise is a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for future travel, experience unique cultures and soak up the sun. With many cruises fully equipped with shops, extravagant dining and a range of entertainment, this is truly the complete holiday package. While many of us might err on the side of cost caution, cruises come with a vast range of price tags, depending on the luxury level you choose for your accommodation. And while many meals are generally included, your alcohol consumption will also dictate costs.
